Just starting out, cost question

So I've sent fanmail to one celebrity years ago, and had success. Today I went to my post office to send out 5 letters with SASE's. The total came out to around $12.00. I used the "bubble" mailers with a thin piece of cardboard in the return envelope.

Is this about the right price? Do you suggest using different materials for shipping?
