Commander Gregg was born in Iowa on January 24th 1921. He learned how to fly at the University of Oklahoma. Commander Gregg joined the U.S. Navy before the United States officially entered WWII and trained in Pensacola and Opa-Locka.
Commander Gregg's first mission was on a Douglas Dive Bomber in the Battle of Midway. He was a 21 year old pilot flying off of the USS Saratoga. He and his fellow pilots, most of them beginners like him, flew for hours across the Pacific Ocean on the morning of June 4, 1942. In a Miami Herald interview Commander Gregg stated the following: "Someone spotted the Japanese carriers. From there, it was “follow the leader straight down.” The pilots dive-bombed the four carriers, landing blow after blow."
